// A SIMPLE HISTORY

Big Bend National Park.

The land OPENSPACE sits on has been shaped by 10,000 years of people, weather, and stillness. Here's the short version.

10,000+ Years Ago
Ancient peoples lived here long before roads or borders, leaving behind tools, rock art, and campfire sites. Native tribes like the Chisos and Mescalero Apache followed seasonal patterns through the desert.
1800s
Once part of Mexico, this land became Texas in 1845. Ranchers, traders, and miners moved in, trying to tame the harsh terrain.
Late 1800s
The discovery of mercury sparked a mining rush. Ranchers grazed cattle across the open desert, but the land was tough and unforgiving.
1933
Locals and conservationists fought to protect this unique place. Texas created Big Bend State Park, and the Civilian Conservation Corps built the first roads and trails.
1944
Texas donated the land to the federal government, and Big Bend became a national park — the first created through state donation.
Today
Over 1,200 plant species and 450 birds make Big Bend one of the wildest, most biodiverse places in the U.S.
Forever
Big Bend remains remote, rugged, and raw — one of the best stargazing spots in North America, protected from light pollution and overdevelopment.
